The rapid growth of the promising field of energy production, management and distribution is characterized as an undisputable fact, leading to the simultaneous increase of the rate of investing actions, contributing to the improvement of this sector. This fact demonstrates the need for development of technologies for prompt detection and identification of failures in critical energy infrastructures. Some of the most indicative examples of critical energy infrastructures include the following: electric power plants (thermoelectric or hydroelectric stations), transmission lines, cooling towers, dams, or even lignite mines. In particular, the uninterrupted and regular function of the aforementioned critical points should be ensured by all means, in order to avoid and prevent any possible damage, devastation, conflagration or small fire incidents, workplace accidents, or even sabotage, which are caused mainly due to poor or inadequate maintenance or inspection. In this direction, the AUTOPSY project is associated with the design and development of an innovative robotic system applied for critical energy infrastructure inspection in order to identify and prevent failures at the external infrastructures of power plant network of Public Power Corporation (PPC). The increased ability to prevent disasters or faults due to infrastructure failures, provided by the proposed system, offers the possibility of minimizing potential risks both for human and for the environment.
